In my case, I don't own a hard case for my guitar (and it's a pain to port around airports anyway) plus a piano-- forget it!<br /><br />So what *can* I do when my instruments are not at hand? Stuff sort of like what you're doing. In my case, I find myself walking down grocery store isles reciting pieces of music theory to try to ingrain stuff to the point I can recite it in my sleep.
