Travel treats

Do you find shoe shine stands anywhere besides airports these days? It's Saturday afternoon, there was no line at security, but we had to be at the airport hours ahead of time for international travel. Changed some dollars to pounds, made sure DH has the spiffiest-looking shoes on the plane, then we're off to find someplace to twiddle our thumbs and practice sitting.

They have a shoe-shine stand at the carwash I use. But here in So Cal everyone wears sandals or flip-flops, so a portable pedicure stand would make a lot more sense.

There's a spectactular portable Victorian shoe shine stand with all these neat metal arms that come swinging out, with a seat that looks like it came from a steam engine that is set up on Regent Street here in London.

Well, I stand corrected, though I have never seen anything so nearly impressive as you describe, Erin. And a stand at a car wash, PFS? How long does it take to wash a car in CA? Never mind the obvious question of what there is to shine, as you so eloquently describe the problem.

When many cars are backed up it can take plenty of time. It's not the quick drive-thru type-- they hand-vacuum, pull it through the machine, then hand-dry it hand-wash all the windows. That's the beauty of a large day-laborer population I guess.
