I currently have four litter boxes in my house: 
one in the Nursery for the kittens, one on the main floor for the big cats, and two on the lower level for the bigs and now occasionally used by the littles. Small, large, and medium. It's enough as long as they are scooped twice a day, and sometimes more often in the Nursery.
